Are you in the process of, or wanting to start, growing your hair out? Then you may find this nifty hair growth chart and list of tips useful to check your progress along the way. Hair grows about 6 inches per year at the rate of about an 1/8th of an inch per month. That’s not very fast is it? The wait you must endure while growing out your hair can be very trying on your patience, but the chart below can help you get an idea of what lengths to expect, and at what stage to expect them.
Even more useful than the growth chart are these 5 important tips to keep in mind while growing out your hair…
Cut it out! No, really…stop cutting your hair as much. A lot of people think that regular trims will cause your hair to grow faster. If optimum hair growth is your current goal then you shouldn’t be too focused on getting trims every 4-6 weeks. Only go in for a cut when you’re seeing many split and dead ends. Trimming your hair keeps your hair healthy, but it doesn’t quicken the hair growth process.
Shampoo less, and optimize natural oils to promote a healthy head of hair. Shampoos contain detergents that strip your hair of its natural oils which are important because they keep the hair from drying out and becoming brittle. Brittle hair breaks easily. Don’t be off-put and running for the hills just yet! I know some of you are more active than others and I’m not saying that you shouldn’t shower, I’m just saying don’t shampoo every day. Shampooing your hair 3 times a week is ideal. Try alternating days, and on the days that you don’t shampoo just rinse your hair with water instead and condition just the ends of your hair.
Another way to optimize your hair’s natural oils is to brush your hair daily. Evey night, brush you hair from scalp to ends thoroughly. Brushing your hair thoroughly helps to even out the oil content in your hair by dispersing the natural oils down and over the hair shaft to the ends. This helps to keep the ends of your hair healthy and strong.
Use less heat: Never apply heat to your hair before applying a serum or pomade first to protect your hair. This is crucial to your hair’s health because heat strips and damages your hair. So keep that in mind when styling your hair if you’re trying to grow it out. An extra ten minutes spent drying your hair on a lower setting is better than having to wait several months to see your hair grow at a slower rate because it is brittle and damaged.
Conditioning Treatments are a good way to keep your hair healthy and moisturized. One I tried recently that worked really well was applying Moroccan argan oil to the ends of my towel dried hair. After the oil was applied to the ends of my hair I popped on a shower cap and then covered the shower cap with plastic wrap. I did this before bed and slept in it and rinsed and shampooed and conditioned in the morning. My hair felt silky all week. This process can be done with your favorite conditioner, olive, or jojoba oil.
