The WEN line of products designed by Chaz Dean is swiftly gaining popularity and for good cause! These products are natural, effective and smell oh-so-lovely. Also the bottles are so pretty- but maybe I’m the only one that will buy a product that will look gorgeous on my shelf, but alas- I digress.
WEN products are made with so many natural products that are proven to be beneficial for hair just look at it’s ingredient list. Endless amounts of flower and plant juices and extracts, and it’s sulfate free! This product is meant to replace your shampoo, conditioner, detangler and leave in conditioner to simplify your hair maintenance routine and the less you fuss with your hair the healthier it will be!
But the non-lathering nature of this product means you have to smother your hair in it for it to be effective, making it wasteful and non cost effective. So, I tried making my own WEN dupe with similar products that are more cost effective. Here is my formula.
– 1/4 cup part sulfate free shampoo
– 3/4 cup sulfate free conditioner
– 1/8 cup pure aloe vera
– 5-10 drops sweet almond oil
– 5-10 drops botanical extract drops
Mix all of the above in a bottle, an empty shampoo bottle or even a travel bottle you can get from target will do. Shake until well mixed. The end product should be a product that looks like, well, conditioner. If it is too watery, which is a result of too much sweet almond oil or extract drops, try adding more shampoo and conditioner keeping true to the 1 parts shampoo, 3 parts conditioner ratio.
I find that this formula goes a lot farther than WEN does as in you need a lot less of it to smooth throughout your hair.
To use massage a small amount into your scalp, using just enough product to cover your scalp- it won’t really lather due to it’s lack of sulfates. When it seems you are losing product try splashing some water in before reaching for the bottle, sometimes that will expand the ‘foaming’ effect. Massage into scalp for 2-3 minutes, then stand under the water and let the product run through your hair, running your fingers from scalp to ends to spread the product though your hair. Repeat if you feel it is necessary.
